Bird watching on the Osa Peninsula is truly a satisfying experience. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, the variety and quantity of birds you can observe in this area is amazing. With around 400 species of birds to be found here there is plenty to look for. This place is one of the last strongholds for the highly endangered scarlet macaw and it is not uncommon to see flocks of 20 or more pairs feeding on almonds near the beach. The area also boasts several endemic species and subspecies of birds unique to either the region or the Osa Peninsula itself. Just imagine, there are more bird species in Costa Rica, which is about the size of West Virginia, than all of North America combined and more than half of those can be found on the Osa Peninsula. With at least 13 different ecosystems on the Osa, there is plenty of varied habitat to explore and all in close proximity to each other. It is not uncommon to spot over 50 species on a 3 hour walk and on occasion up to twice that many have been spotted in a single morning.
Osa Discoveries has put together several birding tours for our clients.
We offer bird tours ranging from half day introductory tours to complete comprehensive series of tours that cover almost every type habitat found on the Osa Peninsula. These tours are as customized as possible to best suit the interest of your group. We usually recommend spending at least 3 days to cover all the hotspots and it is not impossible to see up to 200 species in this short amount of time.
How long do our guided bird watching tours take?
Our early morning tours range from 3-4 hours plus transportation time to the selected site. Our late afternoon tours are also about 3-4 hours long and extend into that magical hour when day fades into night.
